artist biography

Tom Dodson was born in Salford, the eldest of five children. They were a typical working-class Lancashire family in an age where hard times and humour often went hand in hand.

As a schoolchild Tom was always top of the class in drawing and could be found filling the pavements around his back street Ordsall home with chalk drawings of the local characters.

But the North of England was a hard place and young Tom had to find work and forget about his pencils and paint due to marriage and a young family - a variety of jobs in industry left little time for art. However, towards the end of his working life he spent several happy years as a school caretaker, it was during this period he began to paint seriously once again. Recognition was swift as Tom's vivid recollections on canvas sold quickly.

Tom Dodson could recall with great clarity those images of childhood days - the discipline of the classroom, the scrapes and games, the gas-lit corner shops - a poor Christmas.

Always a generous approachable man, full of life and with a mischevious sense of humour, it was fitting that he was able to experience at first hand the sheer enjoyment he gave to so many people through his unique talent.
